Mergers and acquisitions involving Portuguese companies in 2018 generated transactions of at least € 22.6 billion, a rise of 76.12% over the previous year. The data were released by the Transactional Track Record.
The real figure is expected to be higher as the data refer only to the 158 operations the amount of which was publicly disclosed, less than half of the total of 350 de facto transactions. Although the value associated with known operations increased in one year, the total number of mergers and acquisitions fell slightly (2.23%, for those 350) compared to the peak of 358 transactions that was verified in 2017.
The real estate (90 operations) and technological (41) sectors stood out among those that registered the highest activity, but it was in tourism and restaurants (32 transactions) that the highest annual growth was observed, of 68%. For four years, real estate stands out as the most active sector.
