House prices in Portugal rose 8.3% in 2021, considering data from December 2021 and the same month of 2020. According to the idealist price index, at the end of December 2021, buying a house had a cost of 2,325 euros per square meter (euros/m2), taking into account the median value. In terms of quarterly variation, the increase was 2.6%.
In 2021, house prices rose in all regions. The Autonomous Region of Madeira tops the list, with a rise of around 13.6%, the highest increase in the country. Next come the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (10.9%), the Algarve (9.9%), the Alentejo (8.3%), the Centre (7.4%), the North (5.2%) and the Autonomous Region of the Azores (4.8%).
The Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with 3,346 sqm, continues to be the most expensive region, followed by the Algarve (2,602 sqm), the North (1,929 sqm) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (1,905 sqm). On the opposite side of the table are the Autonomous Region of the Azores (1,047 €/m2), Alentejo (1,109 €/m2) and the Centre (1,187 €/m2) which are the cheapest regions.
