The Portuguese capital was for the first time the host of the grand final of the World Travel Awards, on a night that can be considered historic for Portuguese tourism.
Portugal left the 25th WTA final gala with a total of 17 prizes, 10 more than in 2017, and Lisbon received two of the most coveted prizes by the main tourist destinations worldwide.
In the race for the title of Best Destination City, Lisbon faced cities like Auckland (New Zealand), Cape Town (South Africa), Dubai, Durban (South Africa), Hanoi (Vietnam), Hong Kong (Malaysia), Las Vegas (USA), London (United Kingdom), Marrakech (Morocco), Mazatlan (Mexico), New York (USA), Paris (France), Quito (Ecuador), Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), Petersburg (Russia) and Sydney (Australia).
To win in the World's Best Destination category, the Portuguese capital hit cities such as Athens (Greece), Cape Town (South Africa), Cuenca (Ecuador), Dubai, Geneva (Switzerland), Hong Kong ( China), Lima (Peru), Dubai, Medellín (Colombia), New York (USA), Orlando (USA), Playa del Carmen (Mexico) and Sydney (Australia).
The nominees of the grand finale are the winners of the regional finals and those chosen by the WTA itself. The voting for the World Travel Awards, created in 1993, is conducted by the public and by tourism professionals.
