This Saturday, December 1st, in what was the first time that Portugal hosted the grand final of the World Travel Awards, considered the "Oscars of world tourism", our country was elected, for the second consecutive year, the best tourist destination in the world.
In a ceremony held at the Pátio da Galé in Lisbon, Portugal renewed the title, taking this time the best over 16 other destinations. Brazil, Spain, the United States, Greece, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, New Zealand, Kenya, Rwanda, Sri Lanka and Vietnam were also nominated for this award.
The World Travel Awards awarded a total of 16 prizes to Portugal, "a historic result that compares with seven prizes last year and four in 2016," emphasizes the Secretary of State for Tourism, in a statement.
"Being a world champion in tourism for the second consecutive year is a sign of Portugal's ability to affirm internationally, thanks to the work of all the Portuguese." Portugal had also been re-elected the best European tourist destination for the second consecutive year in a competition which also included Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
"In the last three years, the international recognition of Portugal has increased significantly," notes the Secretary of State for Tourism, noting that, "since 2015, the number of international articles on destination Portugal has increased by 107%."
