According to a study published by HomeAway, 77% of Portuguese travelers advise other foreign families to visit Portugal due to their distinctive culture and traditional gastronomy, 73% remember that the Portuguese people are known to be an excellent host and appreciate the art of well receive. 65% of respondents say that Portugal is a great country to be visited by varied landscapes, along with its unique nature, and 57% choose the diverse culture, such as music, theater and museums, as the best national attractions. As for the destinations destined for a family holiday, 84% of the national tourists choose the region of Gerês, 68% select the romantic village of Sintra and 49.5% advise the landscapes to lose sight of the Serra da Estrela. If the trip is made for two, the Douro region (26%) was considered the most romantic for a weekend getaway.
When it comes to recommending a gastronomic itinerary to families visiting Portugal, the national tourists name the following delicacies: the famous pastel de nata (58%), cooked in Portuguese (53%), piglets of Bairrada (42%), not forgetting the francesinha, so characteristic of the northern region (36%).
According to data obtained by the HomeAway study, Portuguese travelers consider Portugal a family friendly destination, welcoming and with several characteristics to which international tourists give special importance. 37% emphasize the fact that we receive hospitably those who visit us, 33.4% highlight the safety factor as a positive point and 31.3% points to the wide range of spaces and entertainment options for children (theme parks, museums, zoo, among others).
The survey that served as the basis for the study was conducted in March 2018, in a sample of 550 Portuguese tourists.
