From May 5 to 12, the 16th edition of the Tales of Freedom Festival will be held. In this year's edition, the poster is made up of storytellers from Brazil, Spain, Morocco and Portugal.
The Tales of Freedom Festival, organized by the Recreational and Cultural Association of Algarve (ARCA), will pass through Olhão, São Brás de Alportel and Faro. Throughout the festival, short stories sessions will be held for various audiences. The words of storytellers will go through schools, libraries and festivals.
According to André Lara, founder of ARCA: "The Tales of Freedom return once again to leave their mark in the cultural spring of Algarve and to become more and more the largest oral narration festival in the south of Beja, where the Andarilhas Words Festival is held, which continues to be the largest festival of oral narration at the national level.
During the first week of the festival, the Tales of Freedom will be present at Ecofest, an event that will take place between May 4 and 5 in the Ria Formosa Natural Park in Marim (Olhão). Ecofest, whose organization is in charge of ARCA, is part of the schedule for the 365 Algarve program. The narrators poster of the first weekend is attended by the Itinerant Narrators, a collective of narrators coming from Brazil composed by Josy Maria and Luciana Costa. From Seville, arrives Alicia Bullù, a storyteller who brings in her voice the Andalusian rhythms and the tales of the south of the peninsula.
On May 8th, the Tales of Freedom Festival will go through the University of Algarve, for the Share Lectures meeting, an event that results from the partnership between the Library of the University of Algarve, the Municipal Library of Faro António Ramos Rosa and the Network of School Libraries (RBE). This short story session will be led by Luís Correia Carmelo, a storyteller living in Faro and a regular presence at oral narrative festivals in several countries.
Fernando Guerreiro, president of ARCA, states that "tales and stories are one of the best ways to understand the world we live in and to be able to decode what happens every day around us. And if we all have a story to tell, we also have a lot of stories to hear, and many of them will be told during the Tales of Freedom Festival. "
On Friday, May 11, at 9:30 p.m., the Tales of Freedom Festival will be present at the Municipal Library of São Brás de Alportel. This evening will be in charge of Hammu Topia, a narrator who arrives from Morocco to tell stories from the great deserts and heart of the Berber people. On Saturday, May 12, the tales will be held in the Municipal Library of Faro for two sessions, at 5:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Both sessions will be in charge of Hammu Topia and Manuel Garrido of the Pirates of Alejandria (Seville).
Throughout 8 days, oral narration will be present in Algarve with tales from various parts of the world and for all types of audiences. There are plenty of reasons to leave the house and listen to the stories that the storytellers of the 16th edition of the Tales of Freedom bring to Algarve.
