Time Out Lisboa

Ever thought of visiting one of the oldest cities in the world? Know that you do not need to leave the country to find one. Lisbon is one of the oldest in Europe and has been inhabited for more than 3200 years.

The earliest cities and civilizations developed during the Neolithic period, in ancient Mesopotamia, and although many no longer exist, others have developed in modern cosmopolitan centers.

A large number of the world's oldest cities are located in the Fertile Crescent, now known as the Middle East, but their access is increasingly difficult thanks to constant wars and conflicts.

However it is not only in the Middle East that you can visit some of the oldest cities in the world. Without having to make many hours of flying, in Europe you can also find several regions that have been occupied for over 3 thousand years and where you can discover breathtaking monuments.

The Telegraph newspaper has drawn up a list of the 16 oldest cities in Europe, which continue to be inhabited to this day. The Portuguese capital is one of the cities highlighted in this publication. It is not the oldest of the continent, but its legacy already fills some chapters of European History.
